Challanges:

One is named "distributed termination detection": know when you're done. "The classic solutions (Dijkstra–Scholten, token passing) just don’t map well onto Tokio’s channel-based world.

Another is the cycle because it's a DAG.

Then there is backpressure with the checker and the sender to the channel. If that channel is full, the response handler blocks; if it blocks, no responses are consumed; if no responses are consumed, no request slots free up.

The TL;DR is that iroh is a library and an architectural pattern to establish peer-to-peer QUIC connections between machines, even if they are behind routers (NAT gateways). It's not a replacement for WireGuard, HTTPS or BitTorrent, instead, it's a building block that you can use to build applications on top of it, but you need to bring your own application protocol and business logic. It's just a very dumb, very reliable pipe between 2 machines anywhere in the world.

Instead of building over UDP, the project builds over QUIC (that is over UDP).

Concepts:

• Endpoint: base unit of iroh. Two endpoints can establish a connection.
• Address: instead of IP addresses, endpoints have addresses that are Ed25519 signing keys.
• Connection: a QUIC connection between 2 endpoints. The connection use QUIC multipath extension, so the connection can flow through multiple pyssical paths.
• Relays: help endpoints punch holes through NATs and relay traffic when it's not possible. They allow to be internet-reachable. The default is the public relays provided by the N0 company, but a relay can be hosted and use privately.
• Discovery / Lookup: through DNS and pkarr signed packets to map an Ed25519 key to IP addresses.
• Transport: over UDP and QUIC handles the reliability and encryption. The transport can be carried over Bluetooth, Tor, radio or serial.
• protocol: application level communication (advertised in TLS' ALPN field of QUIC). A few are provided by iroh's team such as Blobs, RPC, HTTP/3

A perfect timing because:

• there is a growing sentiment against big tech and the US era of cooperation's end. Thus some are turning to build open and decentralized solutions.
• the invasion of Ukraine and industrial advances in China have revealed to the world the incredible leverage offered by cheap drones and robots. « Mon réseau mobile » permet de comparer les performances des opérateurs mobiles en matière de couverture (services : "Appels et SMS" et "Internet mobile") et de qualité de service dans son lieu de vie comme dans les transports, en France métropolitaine et en Outre-mer.

L'article relate la gestion des bots d'IA: ils sont devenus un enfer depuis quelques temps.

Un site web ne se résume pas à des fichiers statiques : beaucoup de pages HTML sont générées dynamiquement par des CMS ou frameworks comme WordPress, Symfony ou Python. Chaque visite peut donc consommer du CPU, de la RAM, des accès base de données et de la bande passante. Quand des visites massives ou illégitimes arrivent, elles peuvent ralentir les sites des clients hébergés.

Jusqu’en 2023, les principaux robots étaient surtout des crawlers classiques comme Googlebot ou Bingbot. Certains bots mal réglés, comme Ahrefsbot, pouvaient poser problème, mais ils étaient généralement identifiables et blocables. Certains crawlaient très mal, visitant des milliers de sous-pages inutiles ou coûteuses, contournant les caches et saturant CPU/RAM.

Au début, la défense consistait à bloquer les bots via leur User-Agent, c’est-à-dire le nom qu’ils déclarent lorsqu’ils visitent un site.

Ensuite, certains bots ont commencé à se cacher derrière de faux User-Agent, en se faisant passer pour de vieux navigateurs ou appareils obsolètes. La stratégie de blocage consiste à interdire certaines plages IP de prestataires clairement identifiés et à bloquer certains navigateurs improbables ou représentant quasiment 0 % du trafic réel.

Cela demande du temps d’ingénieur, consomme des ressources serveur, de la bande passante, use les machines, et augmente donc les coûts continuellement.

Dernièrement en 2025, les bots ont commencé à avoir des IPs résidentielles et des User-Agent crédibles. Octopuce cite le cas d'un crawler sauvage utilisant 1,3 million d’adresses IP distinctes en deux semaines, dont 950 000 n’ont fait qu’une seule requête. Ces nouveaux crawls utiliseraient des téléphones Android via des applications douteuses permettant de monétiser la bande passante des utilisateurs. Cette méthode est illégitime et sûrement illégale.

Octopuce conclut sur l'utilisation d'Anubis comme parade partielle, mais aucune solution n'existe actuellement. Ce coût de l'IA n'est pas prise en compte dans le bilan environnemental réel des services d’IA.
