Le jeu de guerre ne permet pas de prédire l'avenir, mais d'identifier des problèmes. Le joueur se rend compte que telle partie du plan n'est pas très adaptée. Plus aucune opération militaire n'est menée sans avoir été jouée au préalable, sur une carte, avec des petits soldats, des dés et des cartes.
